Istanbul
In 2014, Japanese photographer Jun Abe spent October in Istanbul in Turkey as a guest of the Istanbul Foto Festival.
In his 2023 photobook “Istanbul,” Abe remains as wordless as ever, letting his images speak without interfering through captions, titles or statements. He photographed people and group and scenes and animals (much of Abe’s Istanbul is populated by dogs and cats) with enviable fervor, not minding (or perhaps actively encouraging) his subjects occasionally glancing into the camera in the moment of photography. Where does street photography end and portraiture begin? Despite the sheer amount and variety of moments and scenes captured by Abe’s cameras (like points of data in a visual study), Istanbul seemed always to have something new, something exciting to offer for Abe to photograph.
“Istanbul is spatially located at the intersection of Europe and Asia and temporally at the intersection of various cultural influences, from Greek philosophy to Islam to Byzantine, all of it overlapping and swirling together to form a city full of wonderful, powerful energy.”
