Sojourn
Sojourn consists of two bodies of works, Inner/City and One/America, which I made in the U.S. The overarching theme, Sojourn, refers to the state of being while residing in NYC, as well as being on the road in the USA. Inner/City series aim to underscore the tension within the complex relations between unpeopled Brooklyn and I, a stranger away from home. It attempts to visualize the struggle and alienation facing a minority in this multicultural environment.
As for One/America, this series put together photographs from multiple road trips before leaving the States. Among them, a major three-month road trip was first interrupted by the death of my artist mentor, and then the breaking-up of a relationship. The road trip persisted, but consequently the journey had become more about overcoming one’s sense of loss, emotional vulnerabilities than exploring the U.S. outside New York City.
