The photographs in Claudia Jaguaribe’s “Beijing Overshoot” were produced in 2015 and 2016 during a residency in Beijing. During her time in China’s capital, Jaguaribe embedded herself in the city, formed connections with locals and documented the city’s architecture, atmosphere, idiosyncrasies and unique moments in photographs.

Her book condenses her experiences into a visual kaleidoscope of moods and impressions, enmeshed and layered like the city it depicts. At times almost overwhelming, “Beijing Overshoot” provides a personal and poetic account of one of the world’s most fascinating megacities, its contrasts, conditions and perspectives, and glimpses at the possibilities that emerge from its chaos.

“Pollution can be intense and it can profoundly affect everyday life and increase the complexity of living in a megacity. Nature becomes less and less present as ethereal technological imagery projected on huge screens is increasingly used.

Day and night are no longer easily distinguishable because pollution creates a veil that envelops the city and the intensity of artificial lights of differing origins and shapes brighten the night. The monumentality of the city and the constant change of the cityscape physically constrain and contain the hutongs and at the same time enhance their value.”
— from Claudia Jaguaribe’s afterword (included in English & in Chinese translation)
