Chinkon no Chizu: Okinawa-sen – Ikkazenmetsu no yashiki-ato wo tazunete (“Map of Departed Souls: The Battle of Okinawa – Visiting the Homes of Perished Families”)

Hiroaki OSHIRO

Publisher: Mirai-sha Publishers

Hiroaki Oshiro, one of Okinawa’s leading photographers, has been documenting abandoned houses in the city of Itoman, site of the final battle in the battle of Okinawa, since his student days.

On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, Oshiro again photographed these so-called “Chineedori” – houses of families that were wiped out during the war. The book features photographs of the houses’ remains as well as historical photographs, taken in eighteen locations in Itoman (formerly Sanwa village) with the help of historical documents and maps. Oshiro’s discreet images show us little stone huts overgrown with plants, quiet buildings left intact in the middle of fields, or rubble still visited to pray and remember the people who once lived there. These buildings and their remains quietly but violently preserve the horrors and tragedies of the past to this day.

The book also contains commentary texts by Isao Nakazato, Hiroaki Oshiro and Toroku Oshiro. Please note that all text in the book is in Japanese.
