DIVE TO BANGLADESH

Syoin KAJII

Publisher: Little More

Formally anchored in street photography, Japanese photographer Syoin Kajii’s book “Dive to Bangladesh” documents the living and working conditions in the city of Dhaka.
In particular, Kajii – trained as a monk and a graduate of Esoteric Buddhism – focuses on the women and children working in garment factories, as well as local transgender communities faced with harsh discrimination. His photographs manage to turn a critical eye to the harsh living conditions of his subjects without appearing patronizing.

“None of us can choose where we are born.
There are no guarantees in life, but sometimes, we have to lose something in order to continue forward. For some unknown reason, luck had overlooked these people in this world. With nowhere else to go, they gathered in the ’T District’ slums on the outskirts of Dhaka.”
— from Syoin Kajii’s afterword
