Finding A Pearly Light

Finding A Pearly Light

Asako SHIMIZU

Publisher: kukui books

The first photobook by Canon “New Cosmos of Photography” Excellence Award winner Asako Shimizu.

The beautiful, fantastical “Finding a Pearly Light” is an arrangement of six series by Japanese photographer Asako Shimizu, from “On Her Skin” (taken in Bolivia in 2006) to “Silence Awareness Existence” (2019, Finland) and the eponymous “Finding a Pearly Light” (shot in Japan in 2018). While seemingly unconnected at first glance, her series – forlorn chemical plants at night, a magical-like horse approaching her within fog, surreal scenes taken at the Uyuni salt lake – over time reveal overlaps and common themes. Each of her series is accompanied by Shimizu’s equally tender poetry, both preparing the mood and lending the images greater depth.

The book also includes a short essay by Fumio Nanjo (senior advisor of the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo). All texts available in Japanese and English.
