Michio Yamauchi’s Hong Kong 1995-1997 captures a significant period in the countries history told through the perspective of Yamauchi’s street photography. Here viewers are able to glimpse into a period of its history, documented and told by the individuals in which whom Yamauchi came across during visits. Through his wandering and encounters, the photographs reveal the coming changes, an end of an era of 156 years of colonial administration, and a the period of internalization and modernization in which Hong Kong experienced during the early 90s leading to the cities handover to China. These scenes reveal a photographic narrative both familiar and unfamiliar which echoes through the individuals whom inhabit the spaces of the city, both guiding the viewer as spectator and voyeur through a period of the city’s history.
