Published in 2013 by Sokyu-sha, Uemoto Hiroshi's Kaiiki is a 72 paged publication which contains 64 images of Otushima, an island located in Tokuyama Bay in the Seto Inland Sea. Found within the pages are a series of photographs which document the former training site of the Kaiten (manned torpedo), used during the last year of Japan's war efforts. Having visited the island in his early twenties, Uemoto was confronted with the unimaginable realities of which the young men enlisted in the Special Attack Forces of the Japanese Imperial military faced during both their training and their ultimate purpose in the suicide missions. Here Uemoto presents a psychological portrait at an attempt at making sense of a reality far removed from the materialist era in which he was born.

Included within is an afterword by Uemoto Hiroshi available in both Japanese and English.
