OKUSOKU VELOCITY OF MEMORY

OKUSOKU VELOCITY OF MEMORY

Shinro OHTAKE

Publisher: edition.nord

This extensive exhibition catalogue accompanied Shinro Ohtake’s show “Okusoku” at the Takamatsu Art Museum in summer 2013.
The exhibition focused on seven separate themes and series—“Distant Views of Memories,” “Afterimages: Inner Exposures,” Africa: Reverberating Memories, “Japanese Views: Scenes from Inside and Outside,” “Paste: Things That are already There and Layers of Memories,” “Handmade Books: The Body and Books,” and “Sketchbooks: Everyday Landscapes”—which are recorded in seven separate booklets contained in this catalogue. Additional booklets offer views from the exhibition itself as well as artist statements and an introduction by the organizers, plus a DVD featuring 8mm visual art created by Ohtake.

“Okusoku is a word I coined to express ‘the velocity of memory.’ Is this velocity, which corresponds to our momentary emotional states, related to the constantly passing present? Such questions inspired me to create the word. […]
The degree of clarity, ambiguity, and the disappearance of memories from one’s past varies according to each person, but in the shadow of tremendously clear memories, the present seems to flow at a furious pace in realtime.” — from Shinro Ohtake’s statement
