In summer 2020, the Artizon Museum in Tokyo holds a homecoming exhibition of “Cosmo-Eggs”, Japan’s contribution to the 2019 Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition.

“Cosmo-Eggs”, which explores themes of coexistence between humans and nonhumans, is recreated mostly faithfully within the exhibition space of the Artizon, and involves the same team as in Venice – curator Hiroyuki Hattori, artist Motoyuki Shitamichi, composer Taro Yasuno, anthropologist Toshiaki Ishikura and architect Fuminori Nousaku. However, while trying to offer visitors a faithful experience of the exhibition in Venice, this homecoming exhibition also explores recreaction, reproduction, site-specific characteristics and other topics. By presenting an archive and documents and flotsam from the production processes, the homecoming exhibition also takes a critical look back at the “Cosmo-Eggs” exhibition in Venice.

The book “Reflections on Cosmo-Eggs at the Japan Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia 2019”, published on occasion of the Artizon exhibition, mirrors the ideas behind the homecoming exhibition and uses the unique potentials of the book to expand them further. Featuring content from the exhibition catalogue that accompanied the Venice exhibition, the book features multiple essays by curator Hiroyuki Hattori, texts from each artist, as well as interviews with thinker and artist Ade Darmawan to explore each individual aspect of the exhibition and its underlying philosophy.
