The Outlands, Selected Works

The Outlands, Selected Works

William EGGLESTON

This volume, published by David Zwirner Books, contains a selection of almost one hundred previously unpublished photographs from William Eggleston’s seminal series “The Outlands”. Created between 1969 and ’74, Eggleston photographed an America that was on the verge of vanishing. His images of signage, rural scenery, roads, cars, gas stations, fields and agricultural equipment formed an iconography of the American Deep South that echoes with melancholy and poignancy. Thanks to the large size and the exceptional quality of the prints, the wealth and fascination of Eggleston’s color photography comes to life on each page.

“With its in-depth selection of unforgettable images—a wood-paneled station wagon, doors flung open, parked in an expansive rural setting; the artist’s grandmother in the moody interior of their family’s Sumner, Mississippi home—The Outlands is emblematic of Eggleston’s dynamic, experimental practice.”
― from the publisher’s description

“The Outlands: Selected Works” includes a foreword by the artist, a short story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Rachel Kusher as well as an extensive essay by Robert Slifkin that offers a deep examination of Eggleston’s work.
