Berenice ABBOTT

Publisher: Steidl

Berenice Abbott focused her photography on the ever changing metropolis of New York. Run-down houses and remains were as much worthy of her attention as the city’s shiny skyscrapers and billboards. She employed a modernist image language in her photography: a simple, dynamic style, views from above and below, stark contrasts, and dramatic edges. Her city chronicle, shot between the years 1935 and 1939, was titled «Changing New York».

This catalogue, published in commemoration of the exhibition at Martin-Gropius-Bau, collects Abbots most famous, iconic photographs of the «Changing New York» series as well as early portraits and her pioneering works as a research photographer, and thereby provides valuable insight into the oevre of this great artist.
