This catalogue juxtaposes the photography of two great Japanese master photographers, Seiryu Inoue (1931-1988) and Ichiro Kojima (1924-1964). Published in conjunction with a 2007 exhibition at the now closed Tokyo-based Rat Hole Gallery, the book opens with photographs from Inoue’s (almost violently) strong “Kamagasaki” series, taken in the poverty-stricken workers’ quarter in Osaka of the same name. Kojima’s work is represented by images from his “Tsugaru” series, shot in the severe coldness in the north of Japan and famous for its poetry and compositional sensibility.
