In the photobook “Mountain views from my archive”, Australian photographer Rohan Hutchinson presents a series of mountain photographs taken between 2000 and 2019. Hutchinson, who usually explores built landscapes in his works, took these pictures in the Canadian Rockies, the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido, and Arctic Norway. While the photographs had been taken over a period of 20 years, the book’s genesis is deeply connected to 2020’s Corona pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. Unable to travel and restricted in his ability to pursue his photographic work, Hutchinson began this project in a search for a sense of freedom.
The photographs range from contrast-rich images which almost seem to reduce mountainous shapes to a pattern to soft, almost monochromatic images that focus on atmosphere. Hutchinson further emphasizes the personal aspect of the images through the book’s design, opting for small images vis-a-vis the usually imposing grandeur of mountain scenery.
Each copy of the book is accompanied by a fine art pigment printed on Japanese Bamboo printmaking paper.
