The life of Masahisa Fukase, one of Japan’s most prolific photographers, told through the eyes of his assistant
In “Masahisa Fukase Den” (“The Life of Masahisa Fukase”), Masato Seto recounts Fukase’s life in a series of biographical essays. In his pointed, thoughtful texts, Seto, himself a photographer who accompanied Fukase as his assistant for 18 years, draws out backgrounds behind Fukase’s many well-known photographs, not shying away from the dark sides of Fukase’s life. While the 14 chapters are divided by several pages of photographs – Fukase’s works or photographs taken of Fukase – the book will require a sufficient understanding of Japanese to be fully enjoyed.
