“Hajimari no hi” (“Day of Beginning”) is an experimental picture book (in Japanese) by Rinko Kawauchi.
With her sensitive photography and the accompanying short, poignant prose, Kawauchi created a sentimental, pensive journey fueled by her experience of giving birth and becoming a mother.
“Something connects them both: a life being born, a life finding its end. In the time we spend living, sometimes we happen upon something wonderful, other times we have to part with something cherished. Each time it is the beginning of something, and there is always a new ‘day of beginning’ waiting.” — from the publisher’s description
