Ku-ji

When Nobuyoshi Araki is asked what the year 2004 brings to his mind, he replies “the sky.”
“I was sad, for some reason. In that year only, the vapor trails behind jets seemed to cut through the sky to me.”
Behind Araki’s words lies his encounter with the poet Minori Miyata.
She contacted him, “Would you photograph me and my body, with its one remaining breast?”
Araki remembers how much her overwhelming presence moved him; her life, and the flowers.
The photobook “Soragoto” (lit. “Fabrication”, written with the character for “sky”) recounts Araki’s encounter with Miyata and was published to mourn her death on March 18, 2005, at the young age of 34.
— from the publisher’s description (translation by shashasha)

The book includes a long text about Araki and Miyata, written by publisher Toshinori Arai (only available in Japanese).
