Celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of Magnum Photos: the classic collection of works from the world’s premier international photographers’ cooperative, now fully updated. One of five international co-editions

“Magnum Magnum” has sold more than 200,000 copies worldwide since it was published in 2007 to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of Magnum Photos. Now, fifteen years later, this updated and expanded edition adds more than 150 works by the twenty-five photographers who have joined Magnum since the publication of the original volume.

The four founders of Magnum edited each other’s photographs. True to that collaborative principle, “Magnum Magnum” features eighty-eight photographers each presenting six works by a fellow Magnum member together with a brief critical text giving the reasons for their choices. From iconic images familiar worldwide to shots of the war in Ukraine and other events unfolding around the globe at this very moment, the book brings together 533 works spread out over more than 700 pages, all in glorious print.

In the fifteen years since the original sixtieth-anniversary edition, society has changed dramatically and Magnum has changed along with it, for example by working to achieve a more equitable balance of genders and to include members representing a more diverse range of outlooks and cultures. The group has, moreover, taken steps to reconsider past images and captions as part of an effort “to reflect on what photography stands for, the nature of representation, the impact that photographic images can have on the people in the images and how they are interpreted by others” (“Foreword”) in this transformative era for photography when anyone and everyone may snap photos and spread them on social media. Unafraid to confront change and take on new risks, the group ventures ever forward while embracing the Magnum spirit, and this collection captures it in the midst of that journey.
