Maan Seoi Lover
Chan Wai-Kwong’s photobook “Maan Seoi Lover” features photographs of an impoverished woman he met and befriended in Hong Kong’s Central district more than 15 years ago. In black-and-white, Chan Wai-Kwong captures her appearance within one of the world’s most affluent neighborhoods and the precariousness of her situation, but—through portraits and close-up shots—also focuses on her being.
“The greatest joy of photographing Central is that you can chat with Maan Seoi. Why do I call her so? Because everytime someone gives her money, she yells ‘Maan Seoi!’ (‘Million Year Old Lover!’) at them, and because she told me about her love stories.
She said I was her best friend.
(I was happy when she said that. Because I don't have many friends.)
I usually buy lunch for her. When I have no money, she would buy me lunch and try to give me money.”
