Heart and Soul
In his new series “Incubation” and “Heart and Soul,” Hong Kong-based photographer Chan Wai Kwong returns to themes that run through most of his previous work: love, sexuality, and the playful (and very explicit) exploration of both in photography.
For “Heart and Soul,” his eagerness to experiment extends beyond the subject matter to extend to the medium itself. Chan Wai Kwong printed each photograph in the series twice—once as a reflective sticker, and once as a transparent sticker, which are then affixed to a transparent sheet of plastic. Housed in a transparent box rather than bound into a fixed book, “Heart and Soul” is also open to experimentation on the part of the viewer. Viewed separately, each version of the photograph leaves a different impression, almost as if they were different photographs. When placed on top of each other, slight misalignments produce interesting effects, such as making the image appear three-dimensional or even in motion.
