Peep Box
Chan Wai-Kwong’s photobook “Peep Box” comes housed in a glass coffin-like box, embedded in soft plastic. The pages of the small book are filled with instant photographs, one per page, that mostly show naked women and men (among them Chan Wai-Kwong himself) and, occasionally sexual acts. The book’s small size and the tight binding force the reader to pry its pages open and literally take a close peep at what the pages have to offer, thereby almost making the audience take an active part in the work (or in the sexual acts).
“About five or six years ago, I wanted to take some instant photos and decided to use this mini-sized film. But afterwards I felt it was too small, and I switched to a larger size. After that, I no longer had a use for the small size photos. So I made them into a photobook and put them into a box that is somewhat similar to a coffin. Seems like a good fit, too.”
